Modern Energy Overview

Modern Energy is a small, family-owned energy-technology company specializing in solar photovoltaic systems, live energy monitoring, and energy security. The company is based and provides services in Ohio and focuses on providing energy solutions to families and businesses that maximize the customer’s cost savings and reduce their environmental impact. This is ensured by utilizing government incentives, reliable and local manufacturers, and completing the full installation process.

Modern Energy was founded in 2012 by Johnathan Gioffre, and has a staff of fewer than 25 employees and a current annual revenue of less than $4 million. Despite its size, the company has excellent customer reviews, an A+ BBB rating, and an alliance with Gioffre Companies Inc., making them stand out from its competitors.

Modern Energy Services and Specifics

Specific Solar Panels Offered

One of the ways that Modern Energy cuts costs is by using local and national suppliers such as CivicSolar and McNaughton-McKay. Experts also list their associated product manufacturers as Enphase Energy, LG Solar, Canadian Solar Inc., and Silfab Solar, all of which are industry-recognized Tier 1 solar manufacturers.

Specific Types of Solar Offered

According to Johnathan Gioffre, Modern Energy focuses on renewable energy systems, backup power systems, and efficiency. Gioffre also states that the company is a full-spectrum renewable energy company.

Solar Panel System: Another way to reduce the customer’s cost is by using hybrid photovoltaic systems and micro-grids. While no information is available on the installation options, one of the company’s principles is “clients-first,” and the installation process includes a full energy assessment and portfolio. This suggests that the company may offer a range of installation options based on your requirements and available space.

Live Energy Monitoring: These are single-phase only and are typically provided for residential customers. Modern Energy installs a smart computer – SENSE for residential projects and CURB for commercial – in your electrical panel. The computer’s sensors connect to the circuits and measure real-time power usage, allowing customers to monitor and track their energy consumption.

Backup Power: Modern Energy refers to backup power as “Energy Security” and has three main options to achieve energy security. These can be used independently or combined and include:

  • Standby Generators
  • Energy Management Systems
  • Battery Systems

All options are available to residential and commercial customers.

Modern Energy’s batteries and energy management technology provide backup during power outages by keeping solar systems operational, use Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries, are UL-1741 and CSA C22.2#107.1 approved, protect sensitive electrical equipment, are designed and built in California.

Other services include:

  • Replacing and changing light bulbs.
  • Adding high-efficiency shower heads.
  • Installing faucet aerators or attic insulation.

Installation costs and process

Costs

Modern Energy pride itself on its competitive pricing and have a simple, four-step process conducted to ensure maximum savings and reduced cost.

The company first assesses your current energy needs and areas that can be reduced for free, creating a complete energy portfolio of your home, business, or farm.
They then focus on boosting your efficiency by working on the areas deemed as inefficient.
Install the renewable energy (solar or wind) needed or desired.
Finally, they install their energy storage and management systems and complete checks and maintenance to ensure that your energy is secure.

Several factors affect the price of the system; however, the company states that most residential roof-mount systems average around $4/Watt and that the larger the system, the lower the $/Watt. They also add, however, that a 4kW system is roughly $15,000. Against the average solar panel cost in Ohio for a 4kW system size, this falls above the system average. When looking at the whole process and reviews, however, this is extremely competitive and falls in line with their competitors. Customers can access a federal tax credit of 22% or 30%, and Ohio offers the ECO-link program for residential customers.

Legitimacy

Modern Energy is a legitimate company:

  • The company has an A+ BBB rating.
  • Customer reviews across multiple platforms highly recommend the company.
  • Their website customer responses and reviews of their residential and commercial projects, as well as an educational “Advanced Energy” blog.
  • The company has an alliance with Gioffre Companies, Inc.
  • The company has an American Solar Energy Society certification.

Information relating to the certification and training of Modern Energy’s employees or the company’s licenses is unavailable, which may dampen the legitimacy of the company.

Maintenance

Modern Energy pride itself on its attention to detail, low cost, and client-first focus, and these are seen in its customer reviews. After an extensive search, an overwhelming majority of the ratings were 5/5, with customer reviews considering the company to be professional, thorough, knowledgeable, and supportive. Customers highly rate the full experience with Modern Energy, with many stating that the company exceeded their expectations or that employees went the extra mile.

While we do not have first-hand experience, reviewers found their customer service to be very efficient and prompt, and this responsiveness and communication were echoed before, during, and after the installation process. Additionally, the contact page displays their email address, phone number, and social media handles, and new customers can get an immediate free quote on their homepage.

Most solar panels and micro-inverters are covered by 25-year warranties and are stated to regularly last more than 30 years.

These highlight Modern Energy’s very high levels of maintenance.

The SolarEmpower View

Despite being a smaller company and lacking some credentials, Modern Energy is unique and one of the few companies offering systems and extras tailored to their customers’ needs. With their excellent customer reviews, knowledgeable staff and blog, and family ownership, we recommend the company and deem them as a worthy long-term investment.
