His purchase of Optical Products Ltd in 1990 provided the ideal vehicle for him to develop and manufacture low cost innovative environmental technology products.

A highly stackable water carrier for emergency aid designed and manufactured for Oxfam was an exemplar product for the Millennium Products initiative and was hailed by Blair as “a good example of the pre-eminence of British design and creativity”, millions of which have helped the world’s refugees.

Through close involvement with Oxfam, it became clear to Barry that appropriate technology could make an enormous difference to the poor and to the environment.

When this appreciation was coupled with his realisation that the Sun could easily provide all man’s energy needs, it resulted in the last decade of completely focused effort, to bring together with highly novel optical design all the factors needed to make solar energy affordable.

This has led to his involvement in 3 substantial EU research projects as manufacturing partner and 4 DTI research projects as lead partner all involved with developing highly novel technology.
